Looking to trade a P-38 fork for ...

Hi,
I am looking to trade a 16 inch suspended P-38 fork or a 20 inch P-38 fork w/room for fenders (square crown), for a P-38 fork set for 20 x 1 1/8 inch tires (unicrown?).

The 20 inch fork I have has about one inch of space above the tire. If I could get the closer fitting fork it would help, since I am not that tall.

Thanks,
-Sam-

Getting your feet flat on the ground at stops

Hi Sam,

I don't have the unicrown-style 20" Lightning fork to trade. Maybe someone else will do a trade with you - I would also post a note on the BROL board, since it seems to attract much more traffic than this one. (Understatement of the year.)

But I am not sure that going to the unicrown-style 20" fork is such a good idea, if I understand your motivation correctly. You say you are not that tall, and do not like the surplus space above the front wheel on the 20" square-crown fork you already have. If your idea is to lower the front end of the bike a bit so as to get your feet flat on the ground at stops, the 16" suspended fork you already have seems like a better approach.

I use a 16" front wheel on my P38 and Stealth to get my feet planted flat on the ground when I stop, but I am only 5'10" with stubby legs. The received wisdom is that larger wheels give lower rolling resistance, all other things being equal, so the 16" wheel has been eclipsed in popularity by the 20".
Maybe the larger wheel does roll a little better, but I think the difference is insignificant for practical purposes. Being able to securely touch ground and support yourself at stops when you are exhausted is a real benefit.

Whatever you decide to do, write back and let us know the results of your experiments. And if you want to sell one or both of your present forks, rather than do a trade, I am sure you will find buyers. I might want the 20" fork myself.

Safe riding,

Me too

Hi Sam,
Joel is right you should have no trouble finding buyers if you decide to sell. I would probably want your 16" suspended fork. I too was tempted to move up but changed my mind after some serious urban riding on a 20" Yes, I too am in the shorter range at 5'8"
Good Luck

P--38 fork...

Hi Joel and Chris,
Yeah, I am just trying to lower the front a little. I have the 20 inch fork on my P-38 now, and like the ride.
I think it would only lower the front about 1/4 inch. But heck, it is something. And if someone wants to put a fender on their P-38 and I don't, why not trade.

Chris, I will let you know if I decide to sell the fork or not. I was going to be selling an entire P-38 with two sets of rims (one a disk) and some extra handle bars, shifters, etc. But maybe I may part out some of this stuff.
