F40 Rear Fairing Frame Crack Repair

Taking off my F40 fairing today for some well-needed bike cleaning, I noticed a crack starting in the rear fairing frame, right where the side support tube hole is. Has anyone ever had a crack like this and repaired it with not too much work?

I am thinking that perhaps a tube sleeve could be placed over the cracked section, with a whole drilled for the side tube mounting.

PS - Fix Found (Thanks Wally)

As a PS - Wally Kiehler, one of the few other Michigan F-40 drivers, gave me this helpful advice on the crack in the rear fairing frame...

Your rear fairing seems to be cracking where mine did. The fix was simple and inexpensive. Home Depot or Lowes or your local hardware sells 1/2" aluminum "C Channel". The 1/2" was the exact size to fit snuggly on 3 sides of your 1/2" round aluminum tubing. I had it tig welded at a local shop for $25. Of course, I had to remove the fairing first. It is stronger than new. I had originally tried C-clamping 1/2" aluminum angle -- but after one year this failed.

Hi Bob -

I don't know if you have contact with Rick Wianecki, but he is extremely good at diagnosing bike problems and fixing them.

It might be pure cowshit, but Len Brunkalla once told me that Tim Brummer may have gotten some of his ideas for the P38 / F40 from earlier bikes built by Rick.

Safe riding,
