P38 Handlebar Adjustment

I'm 6'4" tall and ride a XL P38. In making adjustments so my knees don't brush the handlebars, I've had to raise the stem about 3/4" above "Maximum" and the handlebars themselves to the maximum adjustment. The problem is that I still don't have the 1/2" clearance recommended between my knees and the bars and on occasion will still brush them. Is there a longer stem available and did I not get it when I ordered the bike, or is this as high as the bars go and I just have to live with it? I do have the boom properly extended(which can affect this)so that I have slightly bent knees at full pedal stroke.
I love this forum, thanks for your help.

More P38 Handlebar Adjustment

I spoke with Tim Brunner today about my handlebar/knee issue and the solution is to purchase a longer riser which is the long verticle tube that the handlebars attach to. It would extend an additional 1 1/2" which is what I need once I have the stem in it's recommended position. So I think I'm going to do that. I haven't had much luck finding a longer stem other than an 8' and 11" which will not work. The new longer riser is $90. I suspect, but don't know for sure, that this request for a longer riser was not communicated to Lightning when my bike was ordered but is no big deal.

knees brushing handlebar problem

Hey Scott - I would telephone Tim Brummer about this. He might be able to sell you a steering column length extender to get the handlebar up higher. I have no experience with this problem.

Let us know what you do, what works and what doesn't.

And thanks for the kind words about the site. It does not get a lot of traffic, but I like to keep it alive anyway.

Safe riding,
Joel

Unorthodox Solution

Funny this should come up since I have sort of the same issue. I have room to raise the bars but I am dead set against having handlebars smack in the middle of my line of site. Check these out Scooter:

Scroll to the bottom of the page. I have a set of these. They are Modolo Gran Fondo. I tried them on my DF bike and didn't like them much but now I'm thinking I may cut the horns off and use them vertically on the P 38. They measure the same width and have the same length of ramp as the existing bars on the 38. So if you can picture them pointing down vertically instead of mounted on a DF stem, they would create a raised "hump" on either side of the stem giving you more knee clearance. I'm not sure how easy they are to find, mine are about 2 years old and cost me $40. I think they still make them.

Unorthodox solution

hey EddyJ thanks for the tip. I did check those bars but I'm not sure I want to go that route. I just don't think it would give me enough clearance once I have the stem where it should be. I left a post regarding what I'm going to do about it after speaking with Tim. I just need to verify the length of my riser and call him to order the longer version which sounds like should work. Thanks again.

P38 Handlebar Adjustment

I just received my new, longer riser for the P38 from Tim Brunner and of course I had to put it on! Once I got everything together and adjusted, I tried it out in the basement and I now have plenty of clearance between my knees and the handlebar. I was able to "seat" the stem in the steerer tube to it's proper depth and attach the riser so it 'grabs' more of the upper, thicker portion of the stem. The handlebar now feels stiffer, which was also a concern.
