P-38 Steel

Hi Lightning Riders! Great to be back on this site/forum. I have been doing a little online sleuthing, trying to figure out a bit more about the steel used in the tubing that goes into making the P-38 frameset. Any information that anyone can provide on that question will be greatly appreciated. My P-38 is a 2006 model which i Purchased new from Rob at RBR in State College, PA. Dave Paul

Hi David -

I am not a metallurgist, just a bike rider. Having said that, my understanding is that the Lightning bikes are made of a steel called 4130. This steel contains small amounts of chromium and molybdenum to increase strength. I think the same stuff is used to build aircraft.
